With just one life to live, many of us have wondered whether or not we’re doing all we can to get the most out of it. Have we seen all we needed to see, and experienced enough? Have we been too kind or perhaps not kind at all? These doubts can haunt us throughout our lives, and often make it difficult to live in and enjoy the present. So here are four ways to get the absolute best out of life.
Live in the Present
Easier said than done; hindsight is 20/20 for a reason. Yet, if we spend all our time thinking about the past and worrying about the future, it can become difficult to really enjoy the present moment. It may also cause us to lose appreciation for our present achievements.
Sometimes when the grass is greener on the other side, it’s a side we have already lived through and may never experience again. But why waste time dwelling on it? It will not bring it back. What it does bring is a strong sense of discontent and even guilt. Instead, we should spend the present learning to be grateful for what we have and working on goals to make a better today and a happier tomorrow.
Fulfill your ‘Personal Legend’
In his book, The Alchemist, Paul Coelho uses a fictional tale to inspire readers to pursue their ‘personal legend.’ This, in essence, refers to fulfilling our purpose and pursuing our dreams. If there is something you are passionate about, then do it. Otherwise, you may regret it for the rest of your life.
To fulfill your ‘personal legend,’ focus on doing what you love. In some instances, it turns into a career, and at other times, it remains a hobby. Whatever the route you take, do not leave your dreams and goals by the wayside. In short, do not sacrifice the things you want to do, for the things you must do. Strike a balance.
Get an Education
Whether it takes place in a classroom, on the job, or on your own, getting an education is an important contributor to our personal success and career success. A college education is necessary for most high-paying jobs, and employees and entrepreneurs who embrace lifelong learning remain an asset to whatever company or project they spend their time. This makes them indispensable.
An education also greatly affects how one perceives the world, and provides information and experiences to solve issues and make better decisions. But do more than get a piece of paper with your name on it. Learn. Grow. Change the way you see the world. Change the world itself.
Another great way to live a fuller life is through traveling internationally. It can also change the way people view you. International travelers usually have interesting tales to share and know about other countries and cultures firsthand, which makes for very interesting conversation.
Through travel, many people also learn to exercise patience, tolerance, and good judgment, all come in handy in daily life. Patience makes us less likely to get upset when things don’t immediately go as planned. Tolerance makes us understanding of our vices and those of others. Good judgment keeps us out of trouble. And seeing the world can also make us more grateful for what we have and to return to home.
There are many ways to get more out of life, and these four tips are a great place to start on your journey to a happier life.
